Penguin Light Station
New England Aquarium
(Boston, MA)
The light station allows visitors to interact with the penguins by controlling a light projected on the bottom of the pool. The penguins chase the light, much like a cat plays with a laser pointer. This provides needed behavioral enrichment for the penguins. For the visitors, the light station catalyzes deeper engagement and greater scientific exploration. The exhibit is now in its second decade, having logged millions of visitor interactions. The exhibit was part of my doctoral research focusing on the impact of interaction on visitor behavior. In addition I have designed interactives that involve behavioral enrichment for other species including sea otters, harbor seals, and even spiny soft shell turtles. All involve a close collaboration with animal care staff and thorough prototyping.
