First In the Field
MIT Museum
(Cambridge, MA)
First in the Field: 100 years of aerospace engineering at MIT, included iconic artifacts, including the original Apollo guidance gyroscopes. An interactive station then allowed visitors to experiment with how gyroscopes can be used to sense changes in direction — principles that have been employed in guidance systems, starting with early torpedos, then airplanes and rockets, all the way to the cell phones in our pockets. Making use of available materials, testable prototypes were built with Lego and evaluated with visitors, before the final models were fabricated.
